Hugh D. Odom – Founder & President

Less than 1% of all attorneys in the United States boast the experience that Hugh Odom has gained over the past 15 years.  Hugh’s extensive knowledge of both real estate and telecommunications law, combined with his vast transactional experience, gives him a status that few attorneys ever reach.

Born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Hugh began his law career with the prestigious firms of Snell & Wilmer and Martin Tate Morrow & Marston.  He went from private practice in 1999 to representing AT&T, a Fortune 10 company and the largest telecommunications company in the world.  There he represented AT&T in approximately 2,000 real estate transactions over a 10 year period working with both internal management and outside counsel to structure the most advantageous transactions for that company.  These transactions encompassed properties in 44 different states, and various countries, abroad. The assets involved in these transactions included retail, equipment, office, and raw land as well as tower locations and represented over $5 billion dollars of financial commitments.

Now Hugh’s passion is dedicated to helping those on the other side of the telecommunications transaction, the landowners themselves.  During the 10 years prior to founding Vertical Consultants, it came to Hugh’s attention that landowners did not have the information they needed and were not receiving the counsel and representation required when it came to dealing with and negotiating telecom leases.  The telecom companies have and continue to rely on this fact. Hugh formed Vertical Consultants to level the playing field when it came to these matters; as the big telecom companies always have expert representation for such a transaction, shouldn’t the landowner as well?

This question became the driving force behind the creation of Vertical Consultants.  Hugh now uses his experience and knowledge to represent a Vertical Consultant client from start to finish when it comes to such a transaction. Hugh has represented clients throughout North America, with such transactions including but not limited to: drafting and negotiation of initial lease agreements, extensions of existing leases, resolution and reconciliation of issues surrounding cell tower and rooftop leases as well as structuring and negotiation of lease buyout transactions.  Many of his efforts have resulted in the recovery of tens of thousands of underpaid rent and expenses, as well as immediate increases in rent by upwards of 100%.

Hugh has a law degree from University of Mississippi, an MBA degree in Finance from Vanderbilt University, and a B.B.A. degree in Finance/Economics from the University of Memphis.  Hugh currently resides in Nashville, TN.
